WHY COMPARE TRIANGULATION AND TRILATERATION?

THE GEODESY DIVISION OF THE NATIONAL OCEAN SURVEY IS CARRYING OUT STUDIES ON THE MERITS OF TRILATERATION. THREE HORIZONTAL CONTROL NETWORKS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED. IN EACH NETWORK ALL DIRECTIONS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED AND ALL DISTANCES MEASURED. LEAST SQUARE ADJUSTEMENTS WERE MADE, VARYING THE COMBINATIONS OF OBSERVATIONS. THE RESULTS ARE ANALYZED BY COMPARING FINAL POSITIONS AND STANDARD ERROR ELLIPSES FOR THE STATIONS AND FOR SELECTED LINES. BASED ON THE INVESTIGATIONS OF THESE THREE NETWORKS SOME RECOMMENDATIONS ARE OFFERED FOR THE COMBINATIONS OF DISTANCE AND ANGLE MEASUREMENTS TO PRODUCE OPTIMUM SCHEMES. /AUTHOR/
