AUTOMATED MAP INFORMATION COMES OF AGE

A MAJOR ADVANCEMENT IN CARTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH HAS RESULTED FROM THE OPERATIONAL SUCCESS OF THE AUTOMATED MAP INFORMATION FILE (AMIF). AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE AERONAUTICAL CHART AND INFORMATION CENTER'S (ACIC) DATA HANDLING SYSTEM, THE AMIF HELPED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF LARGE INVENTORIES OF UNPROCESSED CARTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS, INCREASINGLY RESTRICTED STORAGE CAPACITY, TIME-CONSUMING MANUAL FILING AND RETRIEVAL OPERATIONS, AND LACK OF READILY ACCESSIBLE EVALUATION DATA. THE AMIF WAS DESIGNED TO STORE EVALUATED INFORMATION AND DESCRIPTIVE DATA ABOUT THE HIGHLY SELECTIVE ACIC MAP/CHART HOLDINGS. THE EVALUATED MAP INFORMATION ALLOWS EFFICIENT RETRIEVAL, THUS, MAKING THE AMIF AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE ACIC PRODUCTION PROCESSES. OUTPUT IS IN THE FORM OF SELECTED LISTINGS AND ONCE OVER BEST COVERAGE PLOTS. CONSTANTLY UPDATED THROUGH THE ADDITION OF NEW INFORMATION AND PURGING OF THE OLD, THE AMIF PROVIDES THE USER WITH THE ACCURATE DATA NECESSARY TO ASSESS HIS SELECTED SOURCE MAP/CHART HOLDINGS. /AUTHOR/
