ELECTRONIC CALCULATORS IN MAPPING AND CHARTING

IN RECENT YEARS, SEVERAL ELECTRONIC CALCULATORS HAVE BECOME AVAILABLE WHICH ARE USUALLY CHARACTERIZED BY THEIR SMALL SIZE, MANUAL INPUT AND SOME FORM OF VISUALLY DISPLAYED OUTPUT. ALL ARE PROGRAMMABLE AND HAVE LIMITED STORAGE CAPABILITY. THE AERONAUTICAL CHART & INFORMATION CENTER IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, HAS UTILIZED ONE SUCH CALCULATOR TO ALLOW ANALYSTS TO DO SMALL COMPUTATIONAL TASKS RAPIDLY, THUS REDUCING DEPENDENCE UPON A LARGE CENTRAL COMPUTER. THIS CAPABILITY HAS BEEN VERY ADVANTAGEOUS WHEN SUCH ACCESS IS INCONVENIENT OR IMPOSSIBLE. /AUTHOR/
