USE OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY IN MONTANA

A STATE-WIDE AERIAL MAPPING CONTRACT WAS ENTERED INTO BY THE MONTANA STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION FOR TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING OF THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM IN 1956. ON COMPLETION OF THIS CONTRACT., THE VALUE OF PHOTOGRAMMETRIC PRODUCTS BECAME EVIDENT AND A SECTION WAS SET UP IN THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT FOR THIS PURPOSE. EQUIPMENT AND PERSONNEL AVAILABLE ARE DESCRIBED. FROM THE FALL OF 1958 TO 1961 MORE THAN 200 SQUARE MILES OF RECONNAISSANCE TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING WAS ACCOMPLISHED. OTHER SPECIALIZED WORK COMPLETED INCLUDES THE THE ASSEMBLY OF AN UNCONTROLLED MOSAIC OF EVERY CITY, TOWN AND HAMLET IN THE STATE. THE RIGHT-OF-WAY DEPARTMENT IS FURNISHED WITH LARGE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF ALL INTERSTATE PROJECTS TO FACILITATE NEGOTIATIONS. RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED ON THE UTILIZATION OF VARIOUS METHODS OF GROUND CONTROL WHEN SURVEYING VERY RUGGED MOUNTAINOUS TOPOGRAPHY FOR DIFFERENT MAPPING SCALES.
