FUNCTION AND TECHNIQUES OF THE PHOTOGRAMMETRY SECTION, KANSAS STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION

THE FIRST SECTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONIC COMPUTER, AERIAL SURVEYS, AND PHOTOGRAMMETRY WAS ORGANIZED IN LATE 1957 IN THE KANSAS STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION. THE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE FOR AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY, PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSING, GROUND CONTROL, AND COMPILATION ARE DESCRIBED. PRESENT PRACTICE IS TO PHOTOGRAPH ALL MAJOR PROJECTS BEFORE BEGINNING DESIGN AND PREPARATION OF HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION PLANS. THE SECTION IS CURRENTLY PHOTOGRAPHING 16 DRAINAGE AREAS IN COOPERATION WITH THE US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. ALL AERIAL FILM IS DEVELOPED AND PRINTED IN THE SECTION'S PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSING LABORATORY. KANSAS USES BOTH A PICTURE POINT CONTROL AND A TARGET MARKING FOR CONTROL PROCEDURES. COMPILATION IS ACCOMPLISHED IN THE SECTION WITH KELSH STEREOSCOPIC PLOTTERS. THE COMPILATION SECTION IS ALSO MEASURING AND RECORDING THE CROSS-SECTIONS FROM WHICH PAYMENT QUANTITIES ARE COMPUTED. THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE USE MADE OF THE STATE PLANE COORDINATE SYSTEM IN KANSAS. IT IS HOPED THAT THIS WILL BE USED IN THE FUTURE FOR HIGHWAY SURVEYING.
