MENSURATION: COLOR VS PAN

A COMPARATIVE TEST WAS CONDUCTED WITH PANCHROMATIC AND COLOR AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS USED IN ANALYTICAL TRIANGULATION AND TOPOGRAPHIC PRODUCTION. ALTHOUGH THE TEST WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED COMPLETELY SCIENTIFIC IN NATURE, IT WAS CONDUCTED UNDER ESTABLISHED COMMERICIAL PRODUCTION PROCEDURES. THE DIFFERENCES IN AERIAL TRIANGULATION ACCURACIES BETWEEN THE TWO METHODS WERE NOT SIGNIFICANT, NOR DO THE STEREOPLOTTING ACCURACY COMPARISONS CONCLUSIVELY PROVE THAT COLOR FILM WILL PROVIDE MORE ACCURATE MAPPING. HOWEVER, THE SIDE BENEFITS OF THE TEST INCLUDE INVESTIGATIONS OF PROPER GROUND TARGETING RPOCEDURES, USE OF AERIAL-CAMERA LENS-DISTORTION CORRECTION PLATES, BOTH IN THE DIAPOSITIVE PLATE PRODUCTION AND THE STEREO PLOTTING INSTRUMENT, AND INTERESTING OBSERVATIONS OF THE PERSONNEL ENGAGED IN THE TEST ON THE ATTRIBUTES OF COLOR FILM. THESE OBSERVATIONS, MANY OF WHICH PROVE TO BE INTANGIBLE TO THE EVERYDAY STEREO PRODUCTION, MAY BE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT RESULT OF THE ENTIRE TEST OPERATION. /PE/
