LARGE SCLAE 70-MM AERIAL COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY

LARGE-SCALE 70-MM. COLOR AND COLOR-INFRARED AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF NORTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA GRASSLANDS AND SHRUBLANDS WERE EVALUATED TO DETERMINE THEIR INTERPRETABILITY FOR IMPROVING RANGE RESOURCE INVENTORIES. DETAILED INTERPRETATIONS OF THESE PHOTOGRAPHS, TAKEN AT THREE DATES, INDICATE MANY POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS IN THE INVENTORY AND MANAGEMENT OF RANGE RESOURCES. BY VIRTUE OF THE HIGH RESOLUTION OBTAINABLE, AND THE COLOR DIMENSIONS OF HUE, VALUE, AND CHROMA, TRAINED INTERPRETERS CAN USE LARGE- SCALE PHOTOGRAPHY FOR: (1) DETECTING AND IDENTIFYING RANGE PLANTS, (2) IDENTIFYING SOIL SURFACE FEATURES (ROCKINESS, SURFACE EROSION, DISTURBANCE BY GRAZING ANIMALS, RODENT BURROWS AND TRAILS, ANIMAL DROPPINGS, AND DEAD PLANT MATERIAL), AND (3) QUANTIFYING PLANT AND SOIL SURFACE FEATURES SUCH AS FOLIAGE COVER, PLANT DENSITY, SURFACE ROCKINESS, AND AMOUNT OF SOIL DISTURBANCE. /PE/
