PHOTOGRAMMETRIC REFRACTION

FORMULAS FOR THE COMPUTATION OF THE PHOTOGRAMMETRIC REFRACTION AS A FUNCTION OF DENSITIES IN A STANDARD ATMOSPHERE WERE PUBLISHED RECENTLY IN A PAPER BY BERTRAM. THE PRESENT PAPER DERIVES THESE FORMULAS FROM SNELL'S WELL- KNOWN LAW OF REFRACTION OF LIGHT RAYS. AN ERROR IN ONE OF BERTRAM'S FORMULAS IS CORRECTED AND A COMPUTATION SCHEME IS GIVEN IN WHICH COMPLICATIONS CAUSED BY THE LOWEST LAYER OF AIR ARE AVOIDED. ALSO, THE REFRACTIONS IN RECENT SUPPLEMENTARY ATMOSPHERES FOR DIFFERENT DEGREES OF LATITUDE AND DIFFERENT SEASONS ARE COMPARED WITH THE REFRACTION IN THE STANDARD ATMOSPHERE. /PE/
