AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE COEFFICIENTS OF VIRTUAL MASS FOR PARALLELEPIPEDS IN SHALLOW WATER

An experimental study of the coefficients of virtual mass for solid rectangular bodies in shallow water is described. The experimental determination of virtual mass coefficients may be obtained by methods of pendulum oscillations, by inertial methods, by methods of vertical oscillations, and by a method of electrohydrodynamic analog. In this study, the method of vertical oscillations is used. The essence of this method is to find the oscillation frequencies of a body in air and in a fluid. This method was first presented by Fettinger in 1924, and was further develop by Pabst in 1929. This article presents the experimental set-up for obtaining oscillograms of vertical vibrations. The results of experimental measurements of the vertical vibrations of rectangular solids are presented. It is noted that the results are in close agreement with those previously published.
