A PHOTOGRAMMETRIC APPROACH TO HIGHWAY ROUTE LOCATION AND RECONNAISSANCE

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF FACTORS AND INFORMATION RELATIVE TO MANY ROUTE POSSIBILITIES. ONCE SEVERAL ROUTE ALTERNATIVES HAVE BEEN CHOSEN FOR A HIGHWAY ROUTE LOCATION, THE PROBLEM IS TO COMPARE AND CHOOSE THE BEST ROUTE. IT HAS BEEN FOUND THAT THE FASTEST, MOST ECONOMIC METHODS OF ASCERTAINING DATA REQUIRED IN COMPARING ROUTE ALTERNATES IS ENCOMPASSED IN PHOTOGRAMMETRY. METHODS OF STRIP PHOTOGRAPHY ARE REVIEWED. THE METHOD USED AT PRESENT IN MONTANA IS DESCRIBED. THE CONTACT-PRINT TYPE STEREO PLOTTER HAS BEEN USED SUCCESSFULLY IN PREPARING DESIGN TOPOGRAPHICAL MAPPING OVER LIMITED AREAS.
