TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING AND THE HIGHWAY PROGRAM

THE HISTORY OF TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING AND THE TOOLS USED ARE REVIEWED. THE PROPOSAL IS DISCUSSED OF A 20-YEAR MAPPING PROGRAM TO COMPLETE THE TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING OF THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES. AS THE LOCATION OF HIGHWAYS BECOMES MORE DIFFICULT AND COSTLY, ADEQUATE TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS ARE MORE ESSENTIAL TO AID THE HIGHWAY ENGINEER IN SELECTING THE MOST ECONOMICAL AND FEASIBLE ROUTE. PUBLISHED MAPS AVAILABLE FROM THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY ARE DESCRIBED.
