Transport and the Environment
This chapter describes how transport, whether by road, rail, sea, inland waterway, air, bicycle, or on foot offers many economic and social benefits but also has a wide range of direct and indirect environmental impacts. This chapter reviews the main types of environmental problems that are created by transport activities, their relationship with the discipline of transport geography, and some of the approaches developed to address transport's environmental impacts. If first defines the meaning of environmental issues in relation to transport and it explains why environmental issues are of growing interest to transport geographers. The main social and natural environmental impacts of transport are then explored, together with various approaches used to lessen these environmental impacts. Finally, some of the key political and geographical challenges involved in promoting more sustainable transport are discussed.
