THE BROAD APPROACH TO HIGHWAY IMPACT-NATIONAL AND REGIONAL

NATIONAL ECONOMIC IMPACT IS DISCUSSED FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF NATURAL RESOURCES, ENERGY RESOURCES, AGRICULTURAL TRENDS, AND HIGHWAY IMPACTS. THE SOCIAL CONSIDERATIONS MUST ALSO BE CONSIDERED INCLUDING THE SHORTER WORK WEEK, THE LONGER LIFE SPAN OF MOST OF THE POPULATION, AND THE INCREAS- ING DEMAND FOR RECREATION. THE ROLE OF HIGHWAYS IN MEETING RECREATIONAL NEEDS SHOULD BE VASTLY GREATER IN THE FUTURE. NATIONAL AND REGIONAL TRAFFIC PATTERNS MUST BE CONSIDERED IN RESPECT TO FREIGHT TRAFFIC AS WELL AS TO PASSENGER TRAFFIC.
