ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL IMPACT OF THE CONNECTICUT TURNPIKE

A SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED OF THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL IMPACT OF THE CONNECTICUT TURNPIKE. BEFORE AND AFTER COMPARISONS AND ANALYSIS WERE USED. HOWEVER, FIVE MAJOR AREAS WERE DESIGNATED FOR INTENSIVE ANALYSIS: (1) THE AREA IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING THE INTERCHANGES, (2) A FIVE-MILE STRIP ON EACH SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, (3) TOWNS TRAVERSED BY THE TURNPIKE, (4) TOWNS NOT TRAVERSED BY THE TURNPIKE BUT LYING WHOLELY OR PARTLY WITHIN THE FIVE-MILE STRIP, AND (5) TOWNS IN THE TWO COUNTIES LYING WHOLELY OUTSIDE THE STRIP. THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WERE SPECIFICALLY INVESTIGATED BECAUSE THE INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THAT THESE REPRESENT THE MAJOR AREAS IN WHICH CHANGE WILL OCCUR: PROPERTY VALUES, MANUFACTURING ACTIVITY, RECREATION INDUSTRY, RETAIL SALES, COMMUNITY SERVICES, AGRICULTURE AND POPULATION SHIFTS.
