ECONOMIC QUESTIONS-EFFECT OF ROAD NETWORK ON THE PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF TERRITORIES (DENMARK)

AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO ESTABLISH AND TEST, BY MEANS OF A MACRO-MODEL, A WORKING THEORY FOR ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF IMPROVED TRAFFIC FACILITIES ON THE WELFARE OF THE AREAS AFFECTED BY THE IMPROVEMENT. THIS THEORY IS USED FOR ASSESSING THE INDIRECT EFFECT OF TWO ALTERNATIVE SCHEMES FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF MOTORWAYS IN DENMARK. AN ATTEMPT TO TEST THE THEORY WAS MADE ON THE STRENGTH OF DATA FROM DENMARK, CONSISTING OF DATA FROM DANISH PROVINCIAL TOWNS. THE APPLICABILITY OF THE FORMULAS IS TESTED AS TO A TREND, COMPARING THE ACTUAL INCREASE IN ASSESSED INCOME WITH THE INCREASE IN ASSESSED INCOME CALCULATED FROM REGRESSION ANALYSIS COEFFICIENTS. THE METHOD PRESENTED IS REGARDED AS A FIRST ATTEMPT TO INTRODUCE AN OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT INTO A DISCUSSION WHICH HAS BEEN MARKED BY A HIGH DEGREE OF SUBJECTIVITY. THE METHOD MUST BE APPLIED WITH CAUTION, AS IT CAN MAINLY REVEAL PART OF THE TRUTH WHILE IGNORING ANY NON- ECONOMIC CRITERIA FOR THE CHOICE OF MOTOR-WAY NETWORKS. THE AUTHOR EMPHASIZES THAT THE MODEL IS IN THE NATURE OF A MACRO-MODEL. RESULTS CAN MERELY INDICATE THE BROAD EFFECTS, WHILE THE RESULTS FOR INDIVIDUAL TOWNS MAY DIFFER CONSIDERABLY FROM THE RESULTS FOUND WITH THE AID OF THE MODEL. THE BENEFITS OCCURRING TO AN INDIVIDUAL TOWN FROM THE TWO ALTERNATIVE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF AN INVESTMENT ARE CALCULATED WITH THE AID OF AN ELECTRONIC COMPUTER. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN TABLES.
