APPLICATION OF MOTOR CARRIER CONTINUOUS TRAFFIC STUDY TECHNIQUES TO THE ASSEMBLY OF INTERCITY FREIGHT TRAFFIC DATA

THE MOTOR CARRIER CONTINUOUS TRAFFIC STUDY /CTS/ PRODUCED STATISTICS FOR ESTIMATES OF CARRIER OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS WITHIN AND BETWEEN U.S. REGIONS. MODIFIED STUDIEDS, SUGGESTED BY DEVELOPMENT AND INSTITUTION OF A SOUTHWESTERN REGION CTS, WOULD GIVE TRAFFIC FLOW DATA FOR TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND RESEARCH. TRAFFIC FLOW ANALYSIS REPORTS WERE COMPILED FROM A STRATIFIED RANDOM SAMPLE OF SOME 90,000 SAMPLED FREIGHT BILLS. THIS SAMPLE FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN REGION CTS CARRIERS REPRESENTED A UNIVERSE OF 20 MILLION 1965 FREIGHT BILLS. INTERCITY FREIGHT TRAFFIC MOVEMENT BETWEEN METROPOLITAN AREAS WAS ANALYZED, AND COEFFICIENTS FOR ESTIMATING TOTAL MOVEMENTS OF GENERAL COMMODITIES BY COMMON CARRIERS BETWEEN STANDARD METROPOLITAN AREAS WERE GIVEN. DATA YIELDED CONTROLS FOR REPORTING TRAFFIC FLOW CHARACTERISTICS BY COMMODITY CLASS, WEIGHT BRACKETS, MILEAGE CATEGORIES, NUMBER OF VEHICLES USED, TYPE OF RATE, ETC. FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF CTS METHODS SHOULD PROVIDE A FAMILY OF REPORTS FOR TRAFFIC FLOW ANALYSES. PROPERLY DESIGNED AND INTERRELATED CONTINUOUS TRAFFIC STUDIES, INCLUDING STATISTICALLY SELECTED MOTOR CARRIERS FROM ALL U.S. REGIONS, SHOULD GIVE DATA FOR TRAFFIC FLOW ESTIMATES BETWEEN SELECTED POPULATION CENTERS, INDUSTRIAL AREAS, AND MARKETING REGIONS.
