RELATIONSHIP OF PASSENGER-CAR AGE AND OTHER FACTORS TO MILES DRIVEN

EMPIRICAL DATA ON EFFECTS OF SUCH FACTORS AS PASSENGER CAR AGE AND MULTICAR OWNERSHIP ON MILES TRAVELED BY AUTOMOBILES WERE PRESENTED. ODOMETER READINGS AND ESTIMATED ANNUAL MILES TRAVELED BY YEAR MODEL WERE ANALYZED, USING DATA FROM THREE HOME INTERVIEW SURVEYS. TWO SURVEYS WERE MOTOR-VEHICLE-USE STUDIES CONDUCTED IN ILLINOIS AND MONTANA. THE THIRD WAS THE NATIONWIDE AUTOMOBILE USE STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE BUREAU OF THE CENSUS. BASED ON TWO ODOMETER READINGS ON THE SAME 1,500 VEHICLES, THE AVERAGE ANNUAL TRAVEL PER VEHICLE WAS OVER 11,000 MI FOR VEHICLES UNDER 3 YEARS OLD, 9500 FOR VEHICLES 4 AND 5 YEARS OLD, AND ABOUT 4,500 FOR OLDER VEHICLES. FIFTY PERCENT OF CARS PURCHASED NEW BY REPORTING OWNERS WERE OPERATED BY ORIGINAL OWNERS 5 YEARS LATER. FIVE PERCENT OF ALL VEHICLES IN SAMPLED HOUSEHOLDS HAD ODOMETER READINGS ABOVE 100,000 MI. TWO INVESTIGATIONS DISCLOSED THAT ESTIMATED AVERAGE ANNUAL MILES PER VEHICLE OPERATED FROM MULTICAR HOUSEHOLDS WAS GREATER THAN AVERAGE ANNUAL MILES PER VEHCILE FROM A SINGLE-CAR HOUSEHOLDS. HOWEVER, PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM THE MONTANA SURVEY INDICATED THAT VEHICLES FROM MULTICAR HOUSEHOLDS AVERAGE ABOUT 12% FEWER ANNUAL MILES PER VEHICEL THAN VEHICLES FROM SINGLE-CAR HOUSEHOLDS. /AUTHOR/
