IMMOBILITY: BARRIER TO DEVELOPMENT

TRANSPORT PLAYS A SPECIAL ROLE IN FACILITATING OTHER OBJECTIVES' GETTING LAND INTO PRODUCTION, MARKETING AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES, MAKING FOREST AND MINERAL WEALTH ACCESSIBLE, DEVELOPING INDUSTRY, EXPANDING TRADE, CONDUCTING HEALTH AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AND EXCHANGING IDEAS. IN RECENT YEARS THERE HAS BEEN A SHARP INCREASE IN THE AVAILABILITY OF IMPROVED TRANSPORT AND IN THE IMPACT OF TRANSPORT ON LEVELS OF LIVING. POOR TRANSPORT IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN WORLD HUNGER AND INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY AND A PRIMARY OBSTACLE TO ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL GAINS. POOR TRANSPORT MAKES IT EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE NATIONAL UNITY. THE INFLUENCE OF TRANSPORT ON ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT IS INDICATED BY TABLES ON WORLD TRANSPORT TRENDS, MOTOR VEHICLES AND HIGHWAYS, MOBILE AND IMMOBILE NATIONS AND DISTRIBUTION OF FREIGHT TRAFFIC. ALSO PRESENTED ARE TABLES ON PROPOSED OR TRANSPORT INVESTMENT PROGRAMS. EVERY COUNTRY, REGARDLESS OF ITS STATE OF DEVELOPMENT, IS BURDENED BY THE HIGH COST OF MOVING. ONE MAJOR STEP RECOMMENDED TOWARD IMPROVING TRANSPORT PLANNING IS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A WORLD TRANSPORT CENTER TO SERVICE THE UNITED NATIONS AS A FOCAL POINT FOR RESEARCH AND EDUCATION.
