RUNNING COST OF MOTOR VEHICLES AS AFFECTED BY HIGHWAY DESIGN INTERIM REPORT

RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO UPDATE AND PRODUCE MORE ACCURATE VEHICLE RUNNING COST INFORMATION FOR USE IN HIGHWAY ECONOMIC STUDIES. ACTUAL FIELD MEASUREMENTS OF FUEL CONSUMPTION OF A STANDARD PASSENGER VEHICLE WERE MADE. A PRECISE ELECTRONIC FUELMETER, UTILIZING PHOTO-ELECTRONIC PRINCIPALS, WAS DEVELOPED WHICH RECORDS FUEL CONSUMPTION TO THE NEAREST 5CC. STUDIES WERE ALSO MADE OF TIRE WEAR, OIL CONSUMPTION, MAINTENANCE AND DEPRECIATION WHICH CONTRIBUTE TO THE OVERALL OPERATING COST OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE. A COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHY WAS COMPILED OF MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATING COSTS. THE RESULTS OF THE FUEL CONSUMPTION MEASUREMENTS ARE PRESENTED IN A SERIES OF GRAPHS AND TABLES. THE ROAD CONDITIONS FOR WHICH THESE DATA WERE OBTAINED WERE THOSE OF MINIMUM RESISTANCE TO MOVEMENT--- LEVEL AND STRAIGHT WITH A HIGH-TYPE SURFACE AND NO WIND. ALL VALUES ARE FOR UNIFORM SPEEDS OF TRAVEL MAINTAINED AT A STEADY MANIFOLD VACUUM.
