HALIFAX STUDIES $2 MILLION PLAN FOR NORTHWEST ARM LINK

LATEST RECOMMENDATION FOR CROSSING HALIFAXS NORTHWEST ARM IS A $2 MILLION CAUSEWAYBRIDGE ACROSS THE INLAND END OF THE ARM. THE SCHEME IS SUGGESTED IN A REPORT PRESENTED TO CITY COUNCIL AND PREPARED JOINTLY BY THE U.S. HIGHWAYS AND CITY ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTS. IT WAS SELECTED FOR MORE DETAILED STUDY FROM 12 SCHEMES SUBMITTED BY CONSULTING ENGINEERS, FOUNDATION OF CANADA ENGINEERING CORPORATION. EARLIER, FENCO PROPOSALS INCLUDED AN $8 MILLION ORTHOTROPIC BRIDGE ACROSS THE SEAWARD END OF THE ARM. THIS IDEA NOW APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN SCRAPPED. THE ARM BRIDGE APPROACHES WERE TO HAVE TIED IN WITH A PROPOSED SECOND HARBOR BRIDGE DOWNTOWN, BUT A MUCH SHORTER CROSSING HAS SINCE BEEN DESIGNATED FOR THE NARROWS. /CGRA/
