STATISTICAL EXPERIMENT DESIGN OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS

FAILURE TO GIVE ADEQUATE ATTENTION TO THE DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS OFTEN MAKES THEIR RESULTS USELESS OR DISTORTED. A HYPOTHETICAL ASPHALT STABILIZATION EXPERIMENT IS USED BY WAY OF EXAMPLE TO SHOW HOW VARIABLES, TAKEN BY THEMSELVES AND IN RELATION TO OTHER VARIABLES, AFFECT THE PLANNING OF THE EXPERIMENT, THE KINDS OF INFORMATION IT CAN BE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE, AND THE INTERPRETATION OF ITS DATA. IT IS ALSO SHOWN THAT IN COMPLEX EXPERIMENTS, TYPICALLY THOSE THAT ATTEMPT TO MODEL REALITY, STATISTICAL METHODS ARE OFTEN VITAL BECAUSE OF THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF DEALING EXPERIMENTALLY WITH ALL POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS.
