THE DATAPLOTTER-A TOOL FOR TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

THE DATAPLOTTER IS A MACHINE FOR DRAFTING STRAIGHTLINE SEGMENTS BETWEEN PAIRS OF COORDINATES, OR PLOTTING THE POINTS AT SINGLE SETS OF COORDINATES X AND Y. THE MACHINE POSTS VALUES OF UP TO 4 DIGITS AT POINTS LOCATED BY COORDINATES. APPLICATIONS OF THE DATAPLOTTER TO TRANSPORTATION ANALYSIS ARE REVIEWED. BECAUSE MUCH OF THE DATA COLLECTED BY THE PENN-JERSEY STUDY HAS BEEN CODED TO GRID ORDINATES, IT HAS BEEN POSSIBLE TO USE THE PLOTTER FOR DIRECT VISUAL PRESENTATION OF KEY PUNCHED DATA. THESE APPLICATIONS HAVE INCLUDED USE IN CONTINGENCY-CHECKING DATA, DOT MAP PRESENTATION, SCATTERGRAMS, NUMERICAL PRESENTATION BY SYMBOL PLOTTING, DRAFTING AND PRESENTATION OF INFORMATION ABOUT HIGHWAY AND TRANSIT NETWORKS. A TECHNIQUE RECENTLY DEVELOPED AT PENN-JERSEY FOR THE PRESENTATION OF DESIRE LINES OF TRAVEL VIA THE DATAPLOTTER IS SHOWN.
