THE ROCKVILLE CONFERENCE - KEY TO NEEDED TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED DISCUSSION OF DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION NEEDS. THE ADEQUACY OF THE ROAD SYSTEM, BOTH RURAL AND URBAN, TO SATISFY THESE NEEDS WERE ASSESSED. HIGHWAY NEEDS WERE DISCUSSED IN REGARD TO URBAN AREA PLANS AND PROGRAMS. THE FOLLOWING HIGHWAY OPERATIONS FUNCTIONS WERE EXAMINED IN DETAIL:(1) LAW ENFORCEMENT, (2) LICENSING AND DRIVER IMPROVEMENT, (3) TRAFFIC SAFETY AND DRIVER EDUCATION, (4) HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAMS, (5) BUDGET, EQUIPMENT AND MANPOWER, AND (6) STRENGTHENING LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
