Chancen aus der Symbiose Fahrzeug - mobiles Endgeraet / Opportunities from the symbiotic relationship of vehicle and mobile device

(A) ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: Mobile device integration in vehicles today is focusing on standardized functional interfaces such as Bluetooth profiles and USS classes. Drawbacks are long lead times and availability of those standardized interfaces compared to the fast-paced CE (consumer electronics) industry and limited functionality determined by the least common denominator between a number of devices. With the proliferation of applications on mobile phones the limitation of their use in the car becomes increasingly unacceptable from the user point of view. In this contribution, alternative approaches for CE device integration are presented. It is motivated by the rapid progress of the CE industry in the area of mobile devices over the past three years. A major change was triggered by the introduction of the iPhone and Appstore by Apple, which caused mobile data services to explode. A large number of simple use cases have been realized as individual apps and made readily available through easy-to-use online stores. Open ecosystems for application development have emerged and attracted a growing community of developers on very short development and release cycles. At the same time the performance and memory capacity of mobile devices have increased rapidly and already surpassed the capabilities of central vehicle infotainment components. Several solutions to address these challenges are discussed in this paper. First, two potential alternatives to the standards based approach are discussed enabling a faster integration of new functions from CE devices at an acceptable effort: The software adapter establishes an interface for standardized functionality on those CE devices, which do not yet expose the functions through the standard interface. The terminal mode establishes a generic function-independent interface and enables integration of new non-standard functions in the vehicle without actually changing the vehicle implementation. Secondly, the authors discuss how the new CE platforms can be used for a premium implementation of vehicle-specific use cases, implemented as so-called remote applications. Here a function implemented on the CE device uses the vehicle HMI, its graphical primitives and vehicle data via a dedicated remote HMI interface, allowing for a seamless integration with the vehicle infotainment system. The opportunities that arise through the integration of vehicle, CE device and Internet are based on four success factors: simple use and development of CE software, easy access to an automotive programming platform, integration with Internet services and the seamless use inside and outside of the car. The overall combined effect has the potential to create a new, seamless and rich user experience, evolving at a speed unprecedented for vehicle infotainment systems.
