RESEARCH NEEDS IN THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES RELATIVE TO HIGHWAY PLANNING

THE ENGINEER, THE PLANNER, AND THE ECONOMIST ARE MAKING POSSIBLE THE HIGHWAY IN SPACE - IN SOCIAL SPACE. OF ALL THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, THE MOST RELEVANT IS THAT OF HUMAN ECOLOGY, WHOSE TASK IT IS TO STUDY PROBLEMS OF SOCIAL SPACE. TO ACCOMPLISH THE BREAK-THROUGH AN IMAGE STUDY IS PROPOSED WHICH WOULD: (1) STRESS MUTUAL DEPENDENCE ON ENGINEERS, PLANNERS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND EDUCATORS, (2) ALLOW SUPERVISORS AND LEGISLATORS TO DIVULGE THEIR THINKING AND IN TURN BENEFIT BY THE THINKING OF THE PROFESSIONALS IN CATEGORY 1, AND (3) INSTRUCT THE PUBLIC ABOUT ITS FUTURE TO ENLIST ITS SUPPORT. IN CONCLUSIONS, THE TASK OF THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES IS NOT TO TELL ENGINEERS WHAT TO DO, BUT RATHER TO SERVE AS A CATALYTIC AGENT IN THE EXPRESSION, REALIZATION AND DISSEMINATION OF IDEAS WHERE THE HUMAN COMMUNITY IS CONCERNED.
