CRACK-INITIATION MECHANISMS

First are noted basic requirements for initiating a crack in a solid. Then a brief outline is given of the arguments underlying current conventional dislocation theories. Finally attention is drawn to cases where these arguments can hardly hold and which seem to call for an alternative mechanism. One, a "dynamic overload" mechanism, is discussed and illustrated by scanning-electron micrographs.
