NEW TRANSPORTATION POLICY LIKELY TO SPELL FEDERAL HIGHWAY ROLE

TRANSPORT MINISTER PICKERSGILL INDICATED PLANS TO SET UP AN AGENCY TO COORDINATE ALL ASPECTS OF TRANSPORTATION IN THE COUNTRY. THE NEW TRANSPORTATION POLICY WILL BE A FACET OF COOPERATION BETWEEN GOVERNMENTS IN COORDINATING HIGHWAY PROGRAMS. THE PROPOSED AGENCY WOULD ADVISE OTTAWA AS A LIAISON BETWEEN OTTAWA AND THE PROVINCES ON ISSUES SUCH AS A SECOND TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY AND A NATIONAL HIGHWAYS POLICY . THE AGENCY WOULD BE MORE INVOLVED IN THE RESEARCH ASPECTS OF TRANSPORTATION. /CGRA/
