A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF SOME OF THE SPECIALIZED ACTIVITIES ON HIGHWAY RESEARCH THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. AFTER LISTING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN 19 COUNTRIES, THE ORGANIZATION OF THESE RESEARCH AGENCIES IS COMPARED WITH SIMILAR ACTIVITIES IN THE UNITED STATES, WEST GERMANY AND BRAZIL. FUNDING OF HIGHWAY INVESTIGATION IN EACH OF THESE THREE COUNTRIES, WHICH FOLLOW A SIMILAR POLICY IS ANALYZED. ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERNS OF HIGHWAY RESEARCH WORK IN WEST GERMANY AND BRAZIL ARE COMPARED WITH THE FIVE ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERNS IN THE UNITED STATES' /1/ NONCENTRALIZED RESEARCH, /2/ CENTRALIZED COORDINATED RESEARCH, /3/ FORMAL RESEARCH, /4/ JOINT RESEARCH, AND /5/ CONTRACT RESEARCH.
