Infrastructure and Trans-European networks - thematic research summary

The first part of this summary provides a brief overview of the scope of the theme and the relevant main policy developments at EU level. The second part contains a synthesis of the main findings and policy implications from research projects and identifies the implications for further research. The theme of infrastructure provision is concerned with the design, construction and maintenance of transport infrastructures for all modes. Both physical networks and infrastructure and communication networks are considered as infrastructure. Policy developments at EU level have mainly focused on the development of the trans-European network (TEN-T). Recently the development of TEN-T has focused on plans for linking TEN-T to neighbouring countries outside the EU. The sub-themes covered include road infrastructure construction and maintenance, rail infrastructure construction and maintenance, European intelligent infrastructure, and the development of theTEN-T. Developing road infrastructure to meet future needs, improvement of the application of RCM analysis to railway infrastructure, proving the advantages of global navigation satellite systems safety applications on railways / the validation of Galileo, improved evaluation of infrastructure projects, and a common approach for transport infrastructure development in the Mediterranean area are areas that would benefit from further investigation.
