SOLID WASTE AND REMOTE SENSING

IN ORDER TO IMPLEMENT PRACTICAL SOLID-WASTE PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT AT THE REGIONAL LEVEL, DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEMS WHICH ARE UNRESTRICTED BY JURISDICTIONAL BOUNDARIES ARE NEEDED. HIGH-ALTITUDE AIRCRAFT REMOTE SENSING PROVIDES A REGIONAL WORKING DATA BASE AND INFORMATION INCLUDING WASTE DISTRIBUTIONS, WASTE CHARACTERISTICS, AND QUANTITIES. SOLID-WASTE QUANTITIES FOR A GIVEN AREA CAN BE ESTIMATED FROM HIGH-ALTITUDE AIRCRAFT PHOTOGRAPHS PROVIDING COLLATERAL STATISTICS SUCH AS AVERAGE AMOUNT OF WASTE GENERATED BY A WASTE SOURCE UNIT, E.G., RESIDENTIAL DWELLINGS, COMMERCIAL OR INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES OR BY POPULATION ARE AVAILABLE. INTERPRETATION OF HIGH-ALTITUDE AIRCRAFT REMOTE-SENSING RECORDS PROVIDES ESSENTIAL DATA FOR SOLID-WASTE PLANNERS INCLUDING THE LOCATION OF WASTE DISPOSAL SITES AND FACILITIES AND CONTRIBUTES TOWARD SELECTING THE MOST SUITABLE DISPOSAL METHOD OR METHODS FOR A GIVEN REGION.
