STEREOSCOPY-WILL DATA OR DOGMA PREVAIL?

A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED TO EVALUATE THE VERTICAL EXAGGERATION (OR MODEL DEFORMATION) PRODUCED BY DIFFERENT LENS AND MIRROR STEREOSCOPES WHERE THE FEATURES IN THE STEREO PAIR WERE NOT SYMMETRICALLY LOCATED WITH RESPECT TO THE CAMERA POSITIONS. A PARTICULAR EFFORT WA MADE TO SELECT VARIABLES WHICH DO NOT DEPEND ON ANY PRECONCEIVED CONCEPTUALIZATION OF THE STEREO VIEWING PROCESS. IT IS BELIEVED THIS WILL ELIMINATE SOME OF THE CONTROVERSY RAISED BY AN EARLIER PAPER WHICH COVERED ONLY THE SYMMETRICAL LOCATION OF THE FEATURES BETWEEN THE CAMERA STATIONS. IT WAS FOUND THE APPARENT HEIGHT-TO-WIDTH RATIO REPORTED BY OBSERVERS DID NOT CHANGE FOR DIFFERENT LOCATIONS OF THE FEATURE WITH RESPECT TO THE CAMERA STATIONS OR WITH THE TYPE OF FOCAL-PLANE STEREOSCOPE USED.
