THE APPLICATION OF SPACE TECHNOLOGY TO GEODESY; ACCOMPLISHMENT AND POTENTIAL

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN SATELLITE GEODESY HAVE DEMOSTRATED THE CAPABILITY OF THIS METHOD TO ESTABLISH A WORLDWIDE REFERENCE SYSTEM. AN OUTLINE IS PRESENTED OF THE METHOD AND POTENTIAL OF DYNAMIC SATELLITE GEODESY AND GEOMETRIC SATELLITE TRIANGULATION IN THE CREATION OF SUCH WORLDWIDE GEODETIC SYSTEM AS WELL AS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DENSIFICATION CONTROL ON CONTINENTAL LAND MASSES. IT IS SHOWN HOW THIS REFERENCE SYSTEM PROVIDES THE FRAME TO WHICH THE RESULTS OF CONVENTIONAL GEODETIC SURFACE OPERATIONS CAN BE TIED. AS A CONSEQUENCE SUCH OPERATIONS WILL, WHEN EXECUTED AT ANY POINT ON THE EARTH, LEAD TO UNIQUELY DEFINED, HOMOGENEOUS RESULTS IN BOTH A GEOMETRICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL SENSE. SUPPLEMENTING THE CONCEPTUAL APPROACH IS A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF EXISTING PROJECTS, INCLUDING SOME QUANTITATIVE STATEMENTS OF RESULTS TO DATE, AS WELL AS A DISCUSSION OF THE POTENTIAL FOR FUTURE CONTRIBUTIONS. /AUTHOR/
