TRENDS IN TRANSPORT OF GOODS IN GREAT BRITAIN

TRENDS IN THE VOLUME OF GOODS TRANSPORTED, THE NUMBERS OF LICENSED HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES, AND AVERAGE CARRYING CAPACITIES OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS ARE ANALYSED. DATA ON EXPENDITURE ON TRANSPORT BY INDUSTRY OBTAINED FROM CENSUSES OF PRODUCTION ARE PRESENTED. FORECASTS ARE MADE OF THE NUMBERS OF HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES AND THE AMOUNTS OF TRAVEL BY HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES THAT CAN BE EXPECTED IF RECENT TRENDS CONTINUE. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT IN THE YEAR 2010 THERE MAY BE OVER A MILLION HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES IN GREAT BRITAIN AND THAT THEY WILL TRAVEL ABOUT 33 THOUSAND MILLION KILOMETERS. /TRRL/
