RETURNS TO SCALE IN THE U.S. TRUCKING INDUSTRY

THIS PAPER EXAMINES RETURNS TO SCALE PROPERTIES OF THE UNITED STATES TRUCKING INDUSTRY, FITTING CROSS-SECTIONAL DATA TO A COBB-DOUGLAS PRODUCTION FUNCTION. THE YOUNG FIRM ENCOUNTERS NUMEROUS PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH GROWTH, BUT AFTER A CERTAIN POINT HAS BEEN REACHED THESE PROBLEMS WILL HAVE BEEN OVERCOME. THE CRITICAL POINT OCCURS WHEN FIRM SIZE HAS PASSED FIFTY EMPLOYEES. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE VALUE OF THE RETURNS TO SCALE PARAMETER TURNS DOWN AFTER A CERTAIN FIRM SIZE HAS BEEN REACHED, BUT THAT THIS SIZE IS GREATER THAN THE CURRENT SIZE OF THE LARGEST AMERICAN TRUCKING FIRMS.
