ENERGY CONSERVATION

THE OBVIOUS NECESSITY FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION WILL REQUIRE NOT ONLY IMPLEMENTATION OF CONSERVATION MEASURES BUT ALSO THE IMAGINATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY TO DEVELOP ENERGY-EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGIES. BECAUSE OF THE CYCLIC NATURE OF THE PROBLEM, THAT ENERGY PRODUCTION CAUSES ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION, AND POLLUTION CONTROLS LIMIT OUR ENERGY-PRODUCING RESOURCES, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT CONSERVATION MEASURES ACCOMPANY EXPANSION OF DOMESTIC ENERGY PRODUCTION. THE U. S. BUREAU OF MINES HAS PREDICTED THAT ENERGY CONSUMPTION BETWEEN 1974 AND 1990 WILL INCREASE BY AT LEAST 50%. THE MAJOR CATAGORIES OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION ARE TRANSPORTATION, RESIDENTIAL/COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRY AND ELECTRIC UTILITIES. SEVERAL POSSIBILITIES FOR ENERGY SAVINGS ARE SUGGESTED. TECHNOLOGY AND URBAN DESIGN STAND OUT AS THE AREAS OF GREATEST ENERGY CONSERVATION IN TRANSPORTATION DEMANDS. IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY, AS WELL AS HIGHER STANDARDS FOR CONSTRUCTION AND INSULATION ARE AMONG THE MEASURES CONSIDERED FOR THE RESIDENTIAL/COMMERCIAL SECTOR. INDUSTRIAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION CAN BE REDUCED BY SUCH STEPS AS REPLACEMENT OF OLD EQUIPMENT, MAINTENANCE, PLANNING FOR THE TOTAL LIFE CYCLE OF RESOURCES, I.E. RECYCLING AND REUSE, AND INCREASED ENERGY AWARENESS PROGRAMS. THOUGH ELECTRIC UTILITIES ARE THE FASTEST GROWING ENERGY CONSUMER, THEY ALSO ARE CONSCIOUS OF EFFICIENT FUEL USE, AS IS INDUSTRY, BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS A MAJOR OPERATING EXPENSE. STILL FURTHER EFFICIENCY IS POSSIBLE THROUGH THE INTRODUCTION OF SUCH MEASURES AS NUCLEAR REACTORS, ADVANCED POWER CYCLES, "WASTE HEAT" UTILIZATION, ETC. ALL THESE CONSERVATION MEASURES MUST ATTAIN A BALANCE WITH ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS IN ORDER TO HAVE A VIABLE ENERGY PROGRAM.
