GOODS TRANSPORT IN CONURBATIONS

THE PAPER EXAMINES THE ESSENTIAL NEED FOR GOODS TRANSPORT IN URBAN AREAS AND SETS OUT A CLASSIFICATION OF URBAN TRAFFIC AND THE PLACE OF GOODS TRANSPORT IN THE OVERALL PROBLEM OF URBAN CONGESTION. A DESCRIPTION OF TYPICAL OPERATIONS IS INCLUDED AND THE EFFECTS OF RESTRAINTS ON GOODS TRANSPORT IN CARRYING OUT THE OPERATIONS ARE DISCUSSED. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO EXAMINE SOME OF THE WAYS IN WHICH GOODS TRANSPORT COULD CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS REDUCING URBAN CONGESTION. A SUMMARY I GIVEN OF THE LONDON EXPERIMENT KNOWN AS 'OPERATION MOONDROP'. COMMENTS, ARE INCLUDED ON PEDESTRIAN PRECINCTS AND SERVICE PRECINCTS. REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE EFFECTS OF CHANGES IN SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION, AND IT IS CONCLUDED THAT MASSIVE EXPENDITURE WILD BE REQUIRED OT ADAPT URBAN AREAS TO FUTURE NEEDS IF THIS GENERATION AND THE NEXT ARE NOT TO WITNESS THE DECAY OF CENTRAL URBAN AREAS.
