Collection and Storage of Specimens for Alcohol Analysis
This chapter describes how the task of collecting proper specimens in medical-legal investigations requires an understanding of the chemical and microbiological process that may affect an analytical result. However, observing a few simple criteria will provide sufficient safeguards to preserve most specimens for a valid alcohol determination. Simply stated, avoid contamination, use properly sized containers, use proper preservatives, and store specimens in appropriate temperatures. In specimens properly collected and preserved from living subjects, the interpretation of results is relatively straightforward. Many additional factors must be considered when interpreting ethanol concentrations in postmortem specimens.
