URBAN STRUCTURE AND RATIONAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT PRICING

THE INFLUENCE OF AREA PARAMETERS ON THE TYPE OF TRANSPORT THAT SHOULD BE ABLE TO OPERATE EFFECTIVELY IN AN AREA, AND THE INTERACTION OF TRANSPORT TYPE WITH THE GIVEN AREA, ARE EXAMINED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT RATIONAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT PRICING WOULD INVOLVE NOT ONLY CHARGING FOR USE OF ROADS, BUT WOULD INVOLVE BOTH A TIME DIMENSION AND A SPECIAL DIMENSION VARYING ACCORDING TO THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL, ESPECIALLY DURING PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS. IF SUCH A RATIONAL SYSTEM HAD ALWAYS BEEN IN EXISTENCE, THE STRUCTURE OF CITIES WOULD HAVE EVOLVED QUITE DIFFERENTLY.
