Analysis of Injury and Fatal Crashes in Highway Construction Zones

This paper presents a comprehensive data analysis of recent highway construction zone crashes in the state of Illinois to provide a better understanding of the characteristics of these crashes in order to identify effective safety measures to improve construction zone layouts. The two main research objectives of this data analysis are to (1) analyze the frequency and severity of work zone crashes; and (2) investigate probable causes and contributing factors of these work zone crashes. To accomplish these objectives, two main research tasks were performed that focused on: (a) gathering the most recent and comprehensive set of data and reports on highway construction zone crashes in Illinois; and (b) studying the correlation among all construction zone crash variables that are available in the gathered data to investigate probable causes and contributing factors of this type of highway crashes.
