FITTING TRUCK MOVEMENTS EFFICIENTLY INTO THE TRAFFIC PROBLEM

THIS ARTICLE ATTEMPTS TO DEVELOP FACTS NOT READILY APPARENT, WHICH CONTRIBUTE TO THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION PROBLEM. DELAYS DUE TO TRAFFIC ACCOUNT FOR LESS THAN 5% OF THE TOTAL TIME; PICK-UP AND DELIVERY ACCOUNTS FOR MAJOR DELAYS DUE TO NO PASSING CLEARANCE AND THE WAIT FOR A BERTH. CONSOLIDATION OF LESS-THAN-TRUCK- LOAD FREIGHT IS RECOMMENDED. RECEIVING AND SHIPPING DURING NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS IS ALSO RECOMMENDED TO AVOID OVERTIME. THE PROBLEMS AND BENEFITS OF PROVISION FOR MORE SHIPPERS TERMINALS AND FOR UNION FREIGHT TERMINALS ARE DISCUSSED.
