COMPETITION BETWEEN RAIL AND TRUCK IN INTERCITY FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION

THE ANALYSIS DEVELOPED IN THIS STUDY INDICATES THAT A SIGNIFICANT DIVERSION OF INTERCITY FREIGHT TRAFFIC FROM TRUCK TO RAIL IS ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE AND THAT THIS DIVERSION WOULD RESULT IN SUBSTANTIAL RESOURCE SAVINGS TO THE NATION. THE ANNUAL SAVINGS IN HIGHWAY EXPENDITURES FROM REDUCING TRUCK TRAFFIC WOULD BE THREEFOLD: CHEAPER ROADS CAN BE CONSTRUCTED, FEWER ROADS ARE REQUIRED, AND MAINTENANCE EXPENDITURES ARE LOWERED. /AUTHOR/
