AN INTEGRATED URBAN-INTERURBAN TRANSPORTATION CONCEPT

THE PROBLEMS OF URBAN AND INTERURBAN TRANSPORTATION ARE NOW NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AS MAJOR ELEMENTS IN THE CRISES CONFRONTING AMERICAN CITIES. THE OBJECT OF THIS PAPER IS TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON FACTORS THAT SEEM BASIC, AND FROM THIS TO SUGGEST AN APPROACH TO URBAN AND INTERURBAN TRANSPORTATION THAT APPEARS TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE, ECONOMICALLY PRACTICABLE, AND SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE. THIS STUDY SHOWS THAT THE COMBINATION OF THE AERIAL CAR TRANSIT SYSTEM FOR LOCAL TRAVEL AND HIGH-SPEED TRANSIT FOR LONGER DISTANCES OFFERS THE POSSIBILITY OF ECONOMICAL URBAN TRANSIT THAT WILL BE ATTRACTIVE TO FUTURE TRAVELERS AND WILL THEREFORE BE ABLE TO OPERATE PROFITABLY, WHILE PROVIDING A QUIET, POLLUTION-FREE SOLUTION TO THE GROWING CRISIS OF METROPOLITAN TRAFFIC CONGESTION AND URBAN BLIGHT. SINCE THE AERIAL CAR TRANSIT SYSTEM INVOLVES NO ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY, A DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYSTEM OPERATION WOULD BE POSSIBLE IN LESS THAN A YEAR. BY ITSELF THIS SYSTEM COULD GO FAR TO SOLVE CURRENT NEEDS THAT ARE NOW BEING MET BY CONSTRUCTION OF NEW THOROUGHFARES, WHICH AGGRAVATE RATHER THAN SOLVE THE BASIC PROBLEM. /AUTHOR /AUTHOR/
