DEVELOPMENT OF A DATA BASE FOR BIENNIAL NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION NEEDS REPORTING

THE LEAD TIME FOR THE BIENNIAL NEEDS STUDY ADMITS OF LITTLE PRIMARY DATA COLLECTION. STATES WITH EXTENSIVE PLANNING OPERATIONS HAVE FOUND THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STUDY LESS BURDENSOME THAN THOSE WITHOUT SUCH PROGRAMS. THE U. S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS WORKING WITH THE CENSUS BUREAU TO MAKE AVAILABLE TO THE STATES TRANSPORTATION AND TRAVEL DATA THAT THEY CAN USE IN THEIR PREPARATION OF REPORTS. HOWEVER, OTHER TYPES OF INFORMATION, SUCH AS INDUSTRY INVESTMENT PLANS, ARE NEEDED TO DEVELOP AN ADEQUATE STATEMENT. AS PART OF THE 1972 STUDY DOT INTENDS BOTH TO MAKE OTHER STATES' INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO EACH STATE AND TO REVIEW THE ENTIRE INFORMATION HANDLING PROCESS.
