LATIN AMERICA AND INTERMODAL TRANSPORT. CURRENT SITUATION AND POTENTIAL

The paper deals with the conditions, considerations and the present status of World Bank participation in the development of the intermodal service in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Two groups of problems are considered: (1) problems affecting the industry "per se" and (2) institutional and regulatory problems. The aims of the World Bank are discussed in some detail. Figures on container and ro-ro traffic through Central American ports (1976) and savings through use of roll-on/roll-off for the distance Sao Paulo-Recife are presented.
