Federal fuel economy regulations require new approaches to four-wheel-drive vehicle design. This article describes such an approach to the design of a fuel-efficient, sport/utility, four-wheel drive vehicle, developed by Dana Corp. It was designed to improve fuel economy of a current production vehicle without sacrificing performance, passenger space, or cargo carrying ability. By applying the systems approach, drive, suspension, and frame subsystems were optimized in attaining that goal.
