A recent U. S. Air Force study concludes that future jet fuel availability may depend on synthetic fuels, and that shale oil is the most viable domestic source of these synthetics. The study also finds that future military fuel specifications must be flexible enough to include synthetics, and that the impact of synthetic fuels on aircraft system components must be analyzed.
