ROLE OF WIND TUNNELS IN FUTURE AIRCRAFT DEVELOPMENT

The effect of future aircraft developments such as the hydrogen-fueled aircraft, the trend toward control-configured aircraft, and the adoption of supercritical wing sections on wind tunnel design is discussed. Four possible ways of economizing wind tunnel power are considered-namely, improving the wind tunnel efficiency factor, increasing the test section pressure, reducing the temperature of the working fluid, and using working fluids with higher molecular weights. Finally, applications of the computer to wind tunnel control are indicated.
