REALISTIC SWEDISH APPROACH TO A MULTI-PURPOSE REEFER

Reefer ship design tends to adopt a relatively conservative approach but the latest series of fully refrigerated ships for Salen differ considerably in that by designing the ship around a palletised cargo handling system, it has been possible to incorporate full width hatches and higher rated deck cranes. This in turn enables the ships to carry cargoes other than refrigerated produce -- including the economic carriage of containers. Built in Sweden and operated under the Swedish flag, the ships are expensive and to be competitive on a worldwide market, the only advantages the vessels have is the ability to work cargo in the shortest possible time and the ability of their owners to utilise the ships to their full extent.
