SEA CONTAINERS' FIRST TRUE RO-RO STILL FAVOURS VERTICAL CARGO HANDLING

Representing the latest thought of the Sea Containers' concept of containership, Adriatica di Navazione SpA, has recently accepted the first of two "Boxer" class vessels for its European/Mediterranean service. These vessels are the largest Sea Containers' ships to date. Although incorporating ro-ro capability, they are essentially geared for vertical cargo handling, being fitted with two gantry cranes. Although the original Sea Container's version of the "Boxer" class is provided with a single side ramp, by virtue of the requirement to call at Alexandria, Adriatica has specified an off-centre stern ramp to enable the ship to berth stern-to should there be a lack of sufficient quay space.
