The first part of the article on resin anchors evaluates the loading characteristics of resin anchor bolts and the design of such systems. Only fully resin bonded bolts are considered, especially rebar and debonded type bolts. The correct choice of bolt and bond length to meet the required specification is discussed. Details are given of possible causes of failure of resin anchor systems by (1) failure within the concrete mass, (2) failure along concrete/resin interface, (3) failure along resin/bolt interface, and (4) failure of bolt. Reference is made to the use of design charts for bond length determination and shear cone angle. /TRRL/
